For the month of September, the M. Patricia
Cronin Foundation to Fight Ovarian Cancer, Inc. joined with
two organizations who have a common purpose to raise awareness
of ovarian cancer and its symptoms. The coalition included
the Massachusetts Division of the National Ovarian Cancer
Coalition (NOCC-MA) and the Ovarian Cancer Education Awareness
Network (OCEAN) at Massachusetts General Hospital. The organizations
sponsored a Web site www.OvarianCancerAwareness.org,
a statewide e-mail campaign, print ads, and public service
announcements on the radio and television. The ads contained
a tag line intended to catch the attention of readers: "14,000
women die every year in the U.S. from ovarian cancer." They
provided information on symptoms of ovarian cancer and encouraged
women to visit a doctor if such symptoms persist for more
than two weeks.
A media campaign followed as well. Magazine and newspaper editors received information about the campaign, and an e-mail education effort targeted women business owners to encourage them and their employees to be aware of the facts that can save their lives.
