Second
Anniversary Celebration
The
Foundation celebrated its second anniversary on Tuesday,
April 8, 2003 at a cocktail reception and silent auction
at Nine Zero hotel in Boston. More than one hundred members
of the legislative, lobbying, and healthcare communities
joined the Board of Directors and Pat's friends and family
at the event. Ticket sales and silent auction proceeds went
toward the Foundation's work to increase awareness of ovarian
cancer and support for women who are diagnosed with the
disease and their loved ones.
The event was hosted by Margie Reedy, Public Policy Fellow
at Harvard University's Shorenstein Center on the Press,
Politics, and Public Policy. Reedy, the former host of "Newsnight"
on NECN, emceed a speaking program that included award and
grant presentations, as well as the official announcement
of Speaker Thomas M. Finneran's position as Honorary Chairman
of the Foundation's Advisory Board. In his first act as
Chairman, the Massachusetts Speaker of the House of Representatives
presented Welch with a Congressional Citation for the Foundation's
second anniversary on behalf of The Honorable Stephen Lynch,
US Congressman. The Advisory Board, which includes members
of the Massachusetts Legislature and members of Pat's family
and friends, was also announced in its entirety.
The 2003 M. Patricia Cronin Prevention Award was presented
to Harvard Pilgrim Health Care by Speaker Finneran. On hand
to accept on the company's behalf was President and CEO
Charles Baker. The 2003 Pat's Friend Award was presented
to Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C./ML
Strategies, LLC by Pat Cronin's long-time friend, Foundation
Advisory Board member and Massachusetts State Senator Joan
Menard. On hand to accept the award on the firm's behalf
was Chairman and President R. Robert Popeo.
The Cancer Connection in Western Mass. was awarded $5,000
to continue its work to help people with cancer and those
who care about them, and the Ovarian Cancer Network was
awarded $2,000 for its second annual three-day workshop
for women with cancer and their friends and families.
